From Japan comes the exclusive news that last month a unique warbird restoration made its first flight. Former airline pilot Shigatsu B. made a succesfull 14-minute flight in a restored Nakajima Ki-44-II Hei, better known in the West as the "Tojo" . The Ki-44-II Otsu (Ki-44-IIb) version of the "Tojo" could be armed with the relatively compact Ho-301 40 mm heavy cannon firing caseless ammunition that was only useful at near point blank range due to very low muzzle velocity. The Ki 44 was able to include all these requirements: its engine was much more powerful, so the Ki 44 could reach 605 km/h and was armed with either 4 12, 7mm machine guns, 2 12,7mm and 2 20 mm cannons or 2 12,7 mm and 2 40 mm short barreled cannons which werent very effective as the fighter has to get very close to the enemy bomber.
